Hard to believe its already been 10 years. Do you remember what you were doin when you first heard about what happened?

I was in 7th grade in math class when my teacher got a call and then got very upset and turned on the tv for us to watch the news coverage of it. Didn't see the 2nd plane hit but a lot of my friends in other classes saw it. It was really crazy. Had some friends that had family that worked at the Pentagon and family up in NY at the WTC and I felt so sorry for them :(

i was on 395 about 4miles away freom the petagon when the plan came down....chit was crazy!!!!! i was stuck there for hourssssss. sad that it happen, and seeing it in front of me made it worse smh

Just walked into class about 20mins late and realized nobody was there, found them in the media room just as the second tower was hit.

I was overseas studying abroad, then earlier in 2001 moved to VA. I was a freshie in HS.

and was in a Muslim private school...we had to leave our school right away and sit on the floor of our bus so no one could see us with scarves on...

we couldnt go back to school for a month because people vandolized our school so bad

Wow, you guys make me feel old.

I remember the day very clearly. But before I go there I want to tell a little side story which explains my intentional reaction. It was about June-ish 2001. I was in my 7th or 8th week of basic training. The Drill Sergeants pull us aside and told us that North Korea had made some kind of strike against the US. They go on to tell us the President of the United States signed an order stopping all basic training and every soldier past x amount of weeks of training are to immediately deploy to Korea for combat. I felt like I was going to be sick. It must have been apparent how terrified we were because all of sudden all the Drill Sergeants started laughing hysterically.

Fast forward a few months and I am now in my IAT school in Fort Gordon, GA. Shortly after class started a little before 10AM or so the hall ways got far more busier than I have ever seen. After a few minutes a Sergeant came in and talked to our instructor (also a Sergeant) about some terrorist attack on the US. I kinda rolled my eyes to the possibility that anyone would be stupid enough to pull something like that. Remember back in 2001, we were at a time of peace. Some of you may not even remember that. More importantly, I was NOT going to let someone make a fool at of me like they did in basic training, so I completely ignored they whole situation. We were dismissed from class and our Drill Sergeants came by a march us back to the barracks. Which was also pretty odd since we would march to class in a torrential downpour. We get back to the barracks and they fall out of formation. I start to head towards my room. I had no intention of going to the Day Room, but I noticed the Day Room was not only packed, but the TV was audible from the Hall Way. On any other day, the Drill Sergeant would have smoked the entire company for something like that. I think at this point was when I knew something was really wrong, I started to get a sense of panic. Through the sea of crowds I could a glimpse of orange, kinda like fire and everyone got loud with “Oooooooh” (along with some other obscenities). I finally work my way towards the TV and this is the images I saw.

It is hard to describe the emotional and physical reaction I had. I was immediately consumed with anger and fear. I felt my neck was getting really hot and then it felt like someone had poured really warm water down my back. My knees became weak. I wanted to do something, but I wasn't sure what I could do. I asked the Drill Sergeant if or how we could volunteer with the rescue effort. He said he would get back to me, but never did. I took me a few days to process everything that I was going through. I have never cared about things like this. I've seen natural disasters on TV or huge freak accidents on TV, but I didn't really care about the people because I didn't know them personally. I didn't understand why this one was different. Even the Oklahoma City Bombing, didn't affect me. After several days, I finally came to the conclusion that a) I do care about people I don't know and b) I was REALLY angry about this because it was intentional, this was my land and my way of life that was under attack. What I came to realize at this point in my life is that I am a patriot. That image is burned into my mind and it is no doubt in my mind that I will never forget it.

It wouldn't be until 2008 that I actually got to experience a deployment, I didn't see any action (despite the depiction of the video), but I got close enough to understand that America is still losing it's sons and daughters to terrorism. Here is a little video I made of my deployment. Enjoy:

i was in 6th grade eating a sammich in the cafeteria. unlike most schools, the teachers at mine PROHIBITED us from turning on any TVs.. like they thought they could keep it a secret that our country was being attacked. smh. i understand their intentions though. they tried to act normal but i saw my super.. um... "promiscuous" english teacher run across the cafeteria saying "it's so horrible!!!" and i knew she was talking about something worse than her tramp stamp..


but seriously, it was really scary esp because we had no idea what was going on.
